“Zelensky’s Appeal to the West: Finding Allies in Uncertain Times”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government are actively seeking to gain the support and recognition of Western nations. With relations between the US and Russia deteriorating, and regional tensions increasing over the conflict in Syria, Ukraine’s appeal for recognition has taken on a renewed urgency.
The presence of Zelensky at the 2019 Munich Security Conference, along with US Vice President Mike Pence, was a clear sign of Ukraine’s intention to persuade the West of its importance in the region. On that occasion, he assured delegates of his government’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and its European integration, which requires the gradual implementation of reforms.
At the same time, Zelensky has been seeking to improve diplomatic relations with the West by signing a series of agreements, such as the Memorandum of Understanding with the UK and the Strategic Military-Technical Cooperation Agreement with the USA. These agreements are intended to improve in-depth security cooperation between Ukraine and the West. This is an important step in the process of building bridges with the West, especially given Ukraine’s current vulnerability to Russian aggression.
Furthermore, Zelensky is seeking to build bridges with anyone who could bring a solution to the political, economic and security issues in Eastern Ukraine. This includes engaging with the leaders of countries such as France and Germany, who have taken part in the Normandy Format talks as mediators.
Despite his efforts, progress appears to be slow. Though Zelensky is gaining more recognition from the West, there is still a need for unified action to counter Russian activities in the region.
Furthermore, with the attention of the Western powers increasingly shifting to crisis in the Middle East, it seems that Ukraine’s appeals for help have receded. Zelensky has suggested a perception of hopelessness in Ukrainian external affairs due to restrained diplomatic and military activity by the West.
It is clear that Zelensky’s focus on regaining recognition and support from the West is an important project that Ukraine needs to take seriously. Only through effective diplomatic relations with Western countries can Ukraine secure its stability and continue its pursuit of democracy and prosperity.
