“Unite & Remember: Biden Marks 9/11 With Urgent Message Against Division”
To mark the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Joe Biden urged Americans to unite to tackle the challenges facing them as a country in a speech on Sunday.
Speaking on the grounds of the Pentagon, which was hit by a hijacked plane on September 11, 2001, President Biden encouraged Americans to come together to oppose out-of control hatred, extremism, and lies that have increasingly come to dominate American discourse.
“Over the past 20 years, the fabric of our nation has been tested. Our adversaries tried and failed to divide us, to stoke violence and to settle scores,” the president said. “But America’s lived by one lodestar, guided by one eternal faith: We the people, united will never be defeated.”
The president’s plea for national unity comes as the nation is beset by a number of challenges, from the Covid-19 pandemic to structural racism to the deep political divisions that have opened up since President Trump’s election.
“Our adversaries — both foreign and domestic — want to foment division among us because in our unity is our strength,” Biden said. “When we are united, think of what we can do: We can meet any challenge, repair what is broken, make right what is wrong.”
The speech was a call for Americans to embrace a shared set of values, from patriotism and dedication to public service, to empathy and a commitment to addressing systemic racism.
President Biden’s remarks on Sunday were an acknowledgement of the division that has marked the past two decades – and a call for hope.
“As we mourn those we lost,” he said. “Let us also remember them and all that they stood for.”
