Deadly Shootings Take Dutch City by Surprise: 3 Dead, Police Investigating

A tragedy has struck the city of Utrecht, Netherlands, after a series of shootings in the area left three dead and nine others injured.

According to police, the shooting occurred at approximately 10:45am on Monday morning, when a man opened fire in a tram traveling near the 24 Oktoberplein square. Initial reports indicate that the man acted alone, and that the shooting was the result of a “terror-related” incident.

Police were quick to establish a wide cordon around the scene of the shooting, and the Central Station and other nearby areas were evacuated. The shooter, identified as a 37-year-old Turkish-born Dutchman, was apprehended shortly thereafter.

The three people killed in the attack were identified as a 19-year-old woman, a 20-year-old man, and a 54-year-old man. The woman died at the scene, while the other two victims succumbed to their wounds in the hospital. The nine other people injured in the attack have been taken to the hospital, but their condition and identity have not been revealed.

The attack appears to have rocked the people of Utrecht. In a statement, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he was “deeply concerned” about the incident and that his thoughts were with the victims and their families. He went on to stress that the government’s highest priority was to ensure the safety and security of the Dutch people.
