“White House Weighs Aid Package Extension to Include Ukraine and Israel”
In a major policy shift, the White House is reportedly considering adding funding for Ukraine to a defense package for Israel.
The change in policy comes as tensions rise in the region, with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its ongoing support for Ukrainian separatist groups stoking instability.
The aid package, which could total as much as $4.5 billion, would mark the largest U.S. assistance package to Ukraine since its freedom from the Soviet Union in 1991.
The package would go toward helping Ukraine improve its military, other security forces, and government institutions. It could also be used to invest in the energy sector, enhance human rights, and combat corruption.
The proposed aid package has drawn mixed reactions from Ukrainian leaders. While Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has welcomed the support, others have voiced concern that it could further antagonize Russia.
Still, Ukrainian officials are likely to favor the aid package, as it could be a much needed boon for their nation’s economy, which is teetering on the brink of recession.
The package could also tamp down the political turmoil that has been gripping Ukraine as of late. That turmoil was on display last week, when the Ukrainian parliament approved a measure that ordered the government to withdraw its troops from the eastern part of the country.
At this point, any aid package will need to be approved by the U.S. Congress. If approved, the package would be the latest sign of U.S. commitment to stand with Ukraine against Russia.
